How To Motivate Yourself Everyday seems like it should be simple, right? But, no matter how determined you are, it can be hard to get yourself out of bed and into work if you aren’t motivated on any given day. Follow these steps to learn how to motivate yourself every day of the week!

Find your why

One of my favorite motivational quotes is from Theodore Roosevelt, who said, People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing. It’s all about focusing on something you can be excited about. When it comes to studying or exercise, create small goals for yourself. If you don’t love something right away, try to find one small thing that makes you happy and focuses your attention. For example, if you’re not a fan of running as a form of exercise, try creating a goal around wearing short shorts while working out (okay—that may not be motivation for everyone). But whatever it is—work toward something smaller until you’ve built up more energy and dedication toward your goal. After all, having fun is half the battle!

Write down 3 things you are grateful for every day

It’s common to focus on what’s wrong and not on what is right. Instead of focusing on what you don’t have, be thankful for what you do have. Write down 3 things you are grateful for every day. Make a practice of reminding yourself that there are things to be thankful for in your life.

Practice forgiving yourself every day

As you go through your day, pay attention to when you make a mistake. If you’re like most people, you probably won’t be too hard on yourself. As soon as you realize that you made a mistake (forgetting something at home or missing an appointment), stop blaming yourself and accepting responsibility for what happened. Try saying to yourself: I made a mistake, and then move on with your day. Don’t dwell on it or add insult to injury by getting angry at yourself for screwing up—just keep going and chalk it up as a lesson learned!

Think about what you will achieve if you stay motivated

Will you be healthier? Will you learn something new? Will you become more financially secure? Is there a clear connection between that outcome and your motivation? Keeping your goals in mind will help. For example, if you are trying to lose weight, it’s easy to think about how healthy you’ll be when you reach your target weight. If you’re trying to increase your income, it’s easier to stay motivated if every day at work means moving closer toward that goal. So, for any goal or motivation challenge, ask yourself what will change for me when I achieve my goal or accomplish my task—and then hold onto those thoughts as motivation. (You can always write those thoughts down!)

Use positive self-talk

The easiest way to motivate yourself is to talk positively to yourself. Stay in control of your thoughts and speak aloud what you are going to do, not what you have done. For example say: I’m going to workout today! instead of I don’t want to workout today. This positive mindset helps you stay focused on your goals and motivated even when things get tough. And it doesn’t take much effort – using positive self-talk only takes 10 seconds a day! You can also set a realistic goal for motivation. Don’t be unrealistic with your goal because that will just make you feel like giving up right away. It might be hard at first but eventually it will become easier as time goes by. It all starts with motivation; without motivation we won’t succeed.

Use visual reminders to remind yourself why you need to be motivated

Seeing is believing, and an easy way to stay motivated is to put up physical reminders that reinforce your reasons for motivation. This isn’t just about having a dry erase board in your home or office that says Make Money!; it’s about making subtle changes that will stick with you over time. For example, if you want to eat healthier, hang some pictures of healthy foods around your kitchen—even just something as simple as apples or bananas will serve as a daily reminder. Be creative with what motivates you and don’t underestimate how far a few small visual reminders can go.

The research isn’t just about exercise, it’s about motivation in general. So I would say that you could take these findings and apply them to your study habits and work ethic. If you want to motivate yourself to study everyday or follow through on work tasks, find ways to remove distractions from your environment—it will help make it easier for you to remain motivated for long periods of time. There are tons of methods out there; experiment with a few different ones and see what works best for you! If the answer is yes, make sure not to leave without waking up and getting dressed for a workout first thing in the morning (especially if it’s easier for you). If your motivation for work is low because of a lack of creative inspiration, take a break to do something else before trying again.
